We teach adults from low-income and diverse communities how to code and help them get engineering jobs in tech. Our graduates go from making $18,000 to over $85,000 a year, going from poverty to the middle class. Graduates are hired at leading companies such as Pinterest, Kickstarter, IBM, Jet, JPMorgan Chase. Participants are representative of the diversity of the NYC community with over 50% women, 60% African American or Hispanic, and 50% immigrant, and 50% without a college education.

C4Q is a rapidly growing startup that’s scaling to make national impact. Founded in 2011, C4Q has doubled in budget and staff each year over the past 4 years. Just three years ago we had only two employees. We are currently a team of 20 and anticipate doubling our team to 40 this year. As a leader within the organization, the Director of Finance & Strategy will drive the financial systems of C4Q, striving to implement best practices to maximize resources while using innovative tools and instruments to increase revenue. In addition to overseeing day-to-day financial operations, the Director will be responsible for developing long-term strategies through the use of financial and operational data. C4Q seeks to constantly improve as we build our organization, and the Director of Finance will work closely with the CEO in evaluating and advancing our organizational strategies.
With C4Q in the process of doubling its programming and staff from 20 to 38 in 2017, this position is an opportunity for a committed and talented individual to help maximize the capacity of our non-profit organization as we navigate this stage of pivotal growth.
C4Q has the ambition to achieve 100% financial sustainability over the next three years by targeting other means of capital, such as earned income, in addition to philanthropic funds. This capital diversification will increase C4Q’s impact directly by enabling it to serve a larger population. The earned income strategy has four key objectives: 1. Further align program outcomes with organizational success and financing structure; 2. Increase the size and impact of program; 3. Further demonstrate Access Code’s economic value; and 4. Create a template to help other similar organizations attract capital.
C4Q recently hit a significant milestone in closing its first round of Pay for Success financing with key investors. The Director of Finance and Strategy will have a rare opportunity to implement, refine, and be a leader within the nascent social impact investing field. As C4Q prepares to launch our next Access Code cohort, the Director of Finance and Strategy will lead efforts in raising the next round of Pay for Success financing to propel C4Q’s growth. The Director of Finance and Strategy will determine an optimal structure for the financing model, while introducing a financing strategy for alternative funds to support our students, including the possibility of a living stipend. Additionally, the Director of Finance and Strategy will create a plan to establish Pay for Success as a proprietary template for financing in the nonprofit sector and will also lead further exploration of other revenue streams, including earned income or impact investing models that will drive C4Q towards our goal of financial sustainability.
Financial Management and Planning
Provide overall financial oversight and management; manage and oversee all financial and business planning activities
Review and approve preparation and finalization of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for C4Q’s board of directors and investors.
Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with CEO
Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
Keep CEO and senior leadership team informed of organization’s financial status
Coordinate and lead the annual audit process
Hire and retain support staff as needed in the future. Manage relationship with external auditors
Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices
Support and advise the CEO in decision making
Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the board of directors
Serve as a business partner to the CEO on the organization’s financial, budgeting, and administrative processes—including HR, payroll, and benefits functions—with an eye to continuously developing and improving systems
Manage the organization’s physical infrastructure and system maintenance, including but not limited to financial, compliance, and legal documents
Earned Income & Business Model Strategy
Engage with existing impact investors and strategic partners such as BlackRock and Guggenheim to refine the financing structure and create a product that serves as a financing template for the nonprofit sector
Pitching to investors, negotiating terms, working with C4Q’s legal counsel on legal documentation execution, and setting up the financial and reporting infrastructure
Determine an optimal structure for future impact investing financing rounds, while introducing a financing strategy for alternative funds to support our students, including the possibility of a living stipend
Develop or refine the earned income strategy towards 100% financial sustainability to reduce reliance on philanthropic giving
Org Strategy Development and Implementation
Provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis
Participate in the strategic planning, ongoing goal-setting and organizational-wide planning as an integral member of the C4Q Leadership Team whose members include: CEO, Chief Creative Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Managing Director of Access Code, Director of Partnerships, and Head of Student Success.
Collaborate with Development and Partnerships teams to drive alignment to revenue and cash targets and support business development
Create and drive the analytic framework for planning and managing organizational change in a highly entrepreneurial organization
Work with C4Q’s Board of Directors and Advisors, including participation in quarterly Board Meetings, monthly Board Finance Reviews, and other committee meetings
Assisting in planning internal professional development strategies and provide mentorship to C4Q staff. Development opportunities include training, industry awareness, or other business trends
8+ years of professional experience with 5+ years of financial management experience
Bachelor degree required, MBA or related degree preferred. CPA and/or CMA a plus
Previous experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area; knowledgeable about unique requirements for nonprofits (FASB, board responsibilities and other standards)
Functional knowledge in financial management, business development, and strategy. Experience conducting valuations and raising capital a plus
Previous experience in budget and resource development
Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of stakeholders and build long-term relationships
Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives and motivate staff during a period of intense growth
Innovative thinking, acute attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure
Strong project management capabilities with the ability to plan, track, delegate, and drive an initiative to timely completion
